WHAT IS THE NEXT BOOK ABOUT?
If you came to the launch of No One Home in Bath in May, you'll have heard me talking about What Comes Next. And What Comes Next in Book 11 is something a little different. For the first time in 10 years, I'm currently writing a standalone novel, not featuring David Raker. I know that might not be the news some of you were hoping for, but after 10 books on the spin, I felt I needed a little break from Raker, just to recharge my batteries where he's concerned and ensure the series remains as (hopefully) high quality as possible. You'll know from previous newsletters I've done that I place great importance on making each of the Raker books feel as different as possible from the last, but that takes a heck of a lot of time, tons of effort and lots of bashing my head repeatedly against my desk… Fear not, though: not only is the standalone very much built from the same material as a Raker book (twisty-turny plots, creepy villains, characters you –– again, hopefully –– have a genuine emotional investment in), Raker isn't going anywhere. Not only will he return for Book 12, there's also a special project in the interim involving him (potentially –– it's still in the early stages), which will come out first. I can't talk much about it yet, but needless to say –– when it's time to spill the beans –– newsletter subscribers will be the first to know.
